My Introduction to Film Photography

My first time using a film camera was during new years day at a party. Given the vibe and the dress code, I thought take photos on film would make the most sense aesthetically.

I was correct.

I’d be lying if I told you guys I was confident in shooting film becuase I’m not. There is so much that can go wrong with film, the lighting might not be as great as you thought it was or someone may have blinked just as the shutter goes off and you would have no idea until you get your roll of film developed.

But even with these issues, I still really want to start shooting with more film cameras.

As I write this, I currently don’t own a film camera. Well… I do, but it’s broken so it doesn’t count. My work around to this current predicament I’m in is to buy the KODAK FunSaver 35mm Single Use Camera for just under £20 on Amazon.

It’s a great little camera and easy to use and explain to people who have never used a camera in their life. I was worried that because of the ridiculously cheap price, the images would be terrible but as you can probably tell I was worrying for no reason

As I mentioned in my previous blog post, I took this same disposable camera I used at a New Years party all the way to Barcelona in January and would take snaps wherever I ended up across the city. I love these photos so much. The lack of digital edge I’m used to seeing on my photos makes these photos ooze with nostalgic vibes even though they weren’t even taken that long ago. The colours are incredible and although they could be copied on Lightroom or VSCO, I still don’t think it would feel the same…

My next mission is to buy a proper film camera and do some street photography with this new kit. Film does appear to have gone up in price since the last time I checked which is probably due to the increase in demand for it these last few years however, it’s a investment I’m willing to make if it means creating images that have the same nostalgic feel to them as the photos showcased on this blog.

I would highly recommend purchasing a disposabe film camera from time to time as the photos produced by such a cheap camera is incredible. I know I’ll be buying more until I find my own personal film camera…

Once I have my film camera, I’ll make sure to write a follow up to this blog so stay tuned for more about my experience shooting with film!
